i dunno about disappointed, but yeah it has been rather quiet around here lately

It always gets a litle quiet here once in a while. I think it's because everyone is too busy helping the elderly or donating to charitable foundations. I know I am.

So get this, my Internet provider decided to "switch equipment" so my broadband Internet has been down for over a week and half. You really have to love the laziness of the Czech people. To compensate, I've been spending about 300 krowns (~$12) every day in an Internet cafe, because I'm in the middle of about 3 different projects right now. Yesterday, I got really tired of just handing the Internet cafe my money, so I purchased yet another cell phone (now I have three) and a data cable, so now I'm using dialup through my cell phone. It basically sounds a lot cooler than it is, for 850 krowns ($34) a month, I get unlimited dialup Internet access through my cell phone. This means if I had the battery life for it, I could basically go anywhere in Prague and use the Internet, albeit slowly. Of course, my laptop battery lasts about 20 minutes, so right now I'm restricted to going anywhere in Prague that has electrical outlets. Places I've used it so far: my room.

The kicker is I just got an e-mail from my Internet provider and the Internet is expected to be fixed in 10 days. So basically I've just bought all this crap for no reason.

haha that's the typical thing with really cool shit like that. when i first got wireless internet for my pc and hooked it up to my cell phone i thought it was awesome. i thought, fuck i can use dial up internet on nights and weekends so i can use it all the time! it was cool till i realized nights and weekends i'm off drinking or looking at pr0n in the comfort of my house, not in a shady location with a cell phone and laptop....

now i have a treo 600 phone, which is kinda the same idea. it's not bad, 'cept i'm realizing i need more uses for the internet on it. i use the phone for a ton of shit, but really, it's not worth $40 a month for unlimited internet if i can't think of some better uses for it.

i was all into using high speed internet through cell phones until i spent a month debugging it when i worked for nokia.

So if i'm reading this right, you're concerned because The Wayback Machine decided not to archive most of August 2001 for major news websites? On first glance, it's like, "Wow, that's kind of weird." But think about how The Wayback Machine works, it more or less waits for major changes in websites before deciding to archive them and the way that it scours pages is based on how many other pages are linking to them, like google.

Do you remember what websites were like after September 11th? Every single fucking page (not just news websites) said something or other about how so-and-so parent company felt bad about the whole thing. It was the trendy thing to do, just like after the tsunami. And of course all the news websites are going to be linked a lot after September 11th, there by forcing archive.org to make an archive just based on the sheer number of links.
