You may noticed that the bertrandom map is bigger and some other pages have smaller maps. This is because I was getting time-out errors on the homepage and I figured out why. There's a lot of links on the homepage and the algorithm I wrote for generating that map isn't exactly efficient. Or optimized. Or anything. Basically, this is how it works:

Put the name of the node in the middle. Find all linked nodes. Pick a random x,y coordinate on the map. If putting a word there overlaps with another word, pick another random x,y coordinate. Repeat as needed.

So what was happening is that it was getting harder and harder to find free space on the map to put links. I'm sure you all cared.

- bertrand (september 22, 2005 at 5:37 pm)

Sure, sure we cared, the last thing we want to have happen is for our computers to explode in our faces.

- mr. pc man (september 22, 2005 at 5:50 pm)

use some javascript, allow the items to overlap but on mouseover command make them relocate or change size so as to let you pick one behind the other by hovering over it's edge to bring it to the front of view...

hope that makes sense.... or just have it draw them in more of a tree like diagram? that might be kinda cool, to see where one node leads to another.. kinda like the path at the bottm, but visual?

- hans (september 22, 2005 at 6:17 pm)

The only words I just heard were, "javascript," "mouseover," "command," "relocate," "size," "pick," "one," "hovering," "node"
"draw," "tree" "diagram," "cool," "path" and "visual."

"bottm" isn't actually a word. I guess what I'm saying is, I don't understand anything about programing software, computers or managing websites, etc. I'm not all that technologically advanced.

- mr. pc man (september 22, 2005 at 7:39 pm)

probably why your name is pc man....

what is your job pc man? i'm curious at this point if your some sort of professional political/environmental activist or if your job relates to it.

- hans (september 22, 2005 at 10:43 pm)

Actually, I'm more of a consultant, if you must know but it doesn't relate to either politics or environmental issues or activism. All I'm interested in doing, is helping people. And that's all the information regarding my career choice that I'm going to reveal to you or anyone else on this website for that matter.

lastly, I'm also a nonpublished writer, not that that matters or impresses anyone at this point either. I have completed a manuscript however and will be working on submitting it to literary agents, editors and publishers as soon as my query letter, book proposal and manuscript are all ready to go. Again, not very impressive, 'yet' that is.

- mr. pc man (september 22, 2005 at 11:08 pm)

Oh, on another note, yeah, I agree, the username PC man does kinda indicate how technologically stupid I am doesn't it? What a username for someone who is only familiar with major softwares and how to use them, internet research and little or nothing about putting together the hardware for a PC, it's software or for that matter creating an Intranet. yeah, yeah, it is to laugh so feel free.

- mr. pc man (september 22, 2005 at 11:12 pm)

i thought you were politically correct, man

- penelope (september 22, 2005 at 11:15 pm)

Originally when I was trying to determine what username to go with, I thought, why not personal computer man? Well, I guess it was a stupid idea, oh well...

remember tempehighguy? I'm having flashbacks...

- double d (september 23, 2005 at 10:01 am)

real funny, looks like you got me in some smart ass kind of way. Obviously though if it was only about prolonging the problem I'd be out on my ass in six months with no respect or integrity. It's really more about shooting down small problems dead in the water before they arise and trying to figure out how to get the big ones back into the water before they kill you or your business.

- mr. pc man (september 23, 2005 at 11:57 am)

we hired a consultant once... he now has my office... he's still a consultant there, it's been 5 years.... the problem was initially supposed to be resolved in 3 months.

Hi, I'm from the government and I'm here to help! (ring a bell?)

- hans (september 23, 2005 at 12:41 pm)

I guess if I knew what the problem actually was, I might have a better idea of why it has taken so long, but usually if it's a consultant working for the government, well, I don't need to dribble on about how I feel about a bureacracy, know what I mean? As far as that is concerned, my philosophy has always been to exceed the customers expectations. So if this supposed consultant said it was going to take three months and it's been five years, he should have said it was going to take 10 years, that way if he actually solves the problem in 9 years, then, he'll be exceeding the expectations of the client if you will?

- mr. pc man (september 23, 2005 at 4:08 pm)

Who the hell is this tempehighguy may I ask?

- mr. pc man (september 23, 2005 at 4:23 pm)

he's you reincarnated... or did i say that backwards?

- hans (september 24, 2005 at 2:08 pm)

that, didn't aswer my question hans, now, take the turkey out of your ass and try again.

- mr. pc man (september 24, 2005 at 7:54 pm)

nah, that cretin was less abusive, more obtuse.

- wallabysnot (september 24, 2005 at 11:01 pm)

Aww, you poor baby, do you want me to cuddle you? Would you like a banana? How 'bout some icecream with chocolate fudge and a cherry on top? Are you hungry, I hear they serve turkeys straight up your ass at In-N-Out if you ask for it?

- mr. pc man (september 24, 2005 at 11:32 pm)

But thanks for partially answering my question anyway. I never have been the kind of person to "turn the other cheek."

- mr. pc man (september 24, 2005 at 11:34 pm)

Unless of course I'm getting paid to, and well, right now I'm not getting paid. I thought this was supposed to be the place where people didn't take themselves too seriously, if you all don't why should I? Is there like a rule book on this site or something that I'm not aware of?

- mr. pc man (september 24, 2005 at 11:37 pm)

look, assclown, I've been a member of this site for over seven years. continue to insult me and I'll... I'll... well shit... there's not a lot I can do except hate you... and I don't particularly enjoy hating anyone. So I ask you, as a last attempt at reconciliation, to 1: discontinue insulting other people in this forum who have the benefit of a long-established relationship on this board, and 2: Realize that other people may want to have a conversation about random shit (hence part of the name of the site, bertRANDOM) without some 'tard coming in and writing 300-line manifestos every other entry. As far as I'm concerned, you are rapidly becoming an enemy and to continue to insult my protests as whines will be construed as what they are: direct assaults upon me which damage YOUR credibility. I hate this flamewar shit so I'm stopping now... Bert, if there's any formal removal procedure I will request it soon if this continues, since you're a good friend I hope that is a possiblity. That is all.

- wallabysnot (september 25, 2005 at 1:44 am)

WTF? As mentioned by "liza" I was not the first one to direct, the first flaming arrow, however, I did return fire with some NUKES, and for that, I find no need to apologise... Then when fired upon, he was defended by certain ass-clowns, who also received fire... This was not my intention... For me, it has been funny ;-) I rarely take things very seriously, except my convictions, which I tend to voice and defend to the best of my abilities. "Can't we all just get along." I'm going to make a deal with you and anyone else who attacked me first, and didn't like it when, as "Liza" said, I was backed up against a wall and decided to DEFEND myself. Here's the deal: A peace treaty if you will...

First of all, if Betrand feels the need to diss me, he should feel equal in his right to diss you as well, since you obviosly have failed to recognize, that this little battle if you will, was not started by moi...
You insulted me and at least one other person on here, "liza" happens to be her name, by assuming we do not have enough intelligence to voice our opinions in however we "randomly" see fit. "fight fire, with fire."

Now, here's the deal. Let's follow that Golden Rule I mentioned previously. If I am a jerk, treat me as though I am a jerk, until I get it through my thick skull that I am a jerk, and decide to stop acting like an ass-clown. OK? In otherwords, I will only continue treating you, the same way that I would expect you to treat me, if I was being a complete and utter ass-clown. Can you handle that? Fact is, Bertrand can't KICK anyone off of here, even if he did, they could just come back under another username, so let's not be STUPID here, let's just all, try to get along, is that too much to ask? I really don't think so.

Now, I'm glad we had this little conversation. You can feel free to direct any of your comrads to this message if you like as I will be perfectly willing to make the same deal with them. I've already spent more time on this website today than I would have liked, so I will be going now. Good day sir. ;-)

- mr. pc man (september 25, 2005 at 2:39 am)

And by the way, wallabysnot, I don't hate you OK. And I really hope you don't actually hate me, it was not my intention to hurt anyone here, that is not my purpose. We are just two different people and obviously we see things a little differently and I can respect that. But if we really aren't taking ourselves too seriously here, then let's not, shall we? But lets not shit on peoples views without expecting our own views to be shit on at the same time, that's all I'm saying here. I almost wish Liza were responding to this threat, she'd probably be better at it then me, cause realistically, it's not at all threatening to me. Anyway, you don't poo on my poo and I won't poo on your poo, you poo on my poo and I'll poo on yours, Deal? Good. ;-)

- mr. pc man (september 25, 2005 at 2:47 am)

Mr. pc man has got to be the most ANNOYING person to ever post here... making tempehighguy look like a good guy. The whole internet-flamewar shit is really lame. Thank you for wasting all of our time. I think I can speak for the other board regulars and say, we really appreciate your fresh viewpoints. I swear that you're like some sort of anti-bush anti-republican greenpeace hippie fundamentalist popup advertisement. Its people like you that make islamic fundamentalists hate Americans.

And now to pull an ein, here is one of my favorite poems by E.E.Cummings:

In your opinion and from your point of view, that may very well be
and I'm sure your comrads may even agree???
This one is by me!!!

I said, WTF, and walabysnot said, what's that noise,
so he decided to call over some of the boys
one joined in and tried to pick pun
the annoying bit he pulled made him look like a nun

No, I'm not blaming walabysnot, because who know's if he's gone
But RCL looks as though he just took a large hit off that bong
Now I really am gone. ;-)

but I'll be back tommorrow

- mr. pc man (september 25, 2005 at 3:13 am)

huh
and people complained when they thought I was poetic..............

- penelope (september 25, 2005 at 4:05 am)

nah, rcl has it all right, this dudes the biggest dipship. i kinda miss templehighguy at this point....

- hans (september 25, 2005 at 10:38 am)

Hans, the point I've been trying to make is, kicking me is like kicking a wall. No matter how hard you kick the wall, you'll never hurt it, in fact, you're probably only hurting your own foot. In fact, if you kick hard enough, I may come tumbling down on you like a ton of bricks and then magically transform back into a wall again. On the other hand, if you only give me a chance, I may transform into more of a bridge. My advice to you. Just don't do it! I wouldn't do it to you and so, don't do it to me.

- mr. pc man (september 25, 2005 at 4:03 pm)

I thought that ee cummings was something penelope wrote...there was enough punctuation to fuel a small bureaucracy and enough inane material to cloud one.

- the melv (september 25, 2005 at 6:04 pm)

For the record, I've liked that poem since long before I had ever read anything ever written by Penelope.

- rcl (september 25, 2005 at 6:06 pm)

I quite liked it .

- penelope (september 26, 2005 at 9:09 am)

I think penelope is a better writer.

- mr. pc man (september 27, 2005 at 1:45 am)

Hey! Anybody familar with blogging. I'm fucking hopeless with anything to do with computer code. So I have a tech question that I hope you can help with.

I'm on blogger.com and in my main body of text I usually have links to other sites. How can I get these links to open in a new window. I have no problem getting the sidebar links to open in new windows with target="_blank".

Any ideas?

- ibizachris (september 29, 2005 at 3:08 am)

Where have you been ibizachris? I would have liked to hear more from you on my node after your last response. ;-)

- mr. pc man (september 29, 2005 at 3:37 am)

I work in a crappy office by day and am a stand up comedian by night. The last two weeks have seen me playing more and more gigs than usual. I've also started renovating my house. Fuck! I hate having to go through this maturity bullshit...

I've been reading the nodes and wanted to contribute more but cest la vie. I'll get back to it soon enough.

Let keep building the bridges folks

- ibizachris (september 29, 2005 at 8:43 am)

I like your attitude. I'm sure you could put some more humor into this B.S. ;-)

- mr. pc man (september 29, 2005 at 9:08 am)

I probably could. However. I've just got in from a gig that went very well and I'm knackered! 2.15am in Brisbane and normal life resumes in 5 hours. Gonna catch some zzz. Love the big nodes dude. Wish I had your power. Night night
