Any ideas on how to generate Traffic? I have some, but don't know if they've been working?

- mr. pc man (february 5, 2006 at 12:20 am)

are you talking about cars, or internet? and if you mean internet, are we talking sales, hits, pages, repeats, or unique?

- hans (february 5, 2006 at 5:42 am)

anything internet related... Specifically hits, which typically is supposed to translate into all of the above, or so, is my understanding on the subject...

A good friend of mine just built me a computer. It's got a 64-bit processor (Like four lanes of incoming and outgoing traffic, instead of only two), 512 megs of DDR ram. DVD burner. 120 gigabytes on the hard drive. Is it possible to convert windows documents over to a mandrake linux system? I know, I know, next thing I know penelope will claim to have a hole in her buttox...

- mr. pc man (february 8, 2006 at 12:31 am)

are you serious about advertising it as a porn site? Sounds like that would be a little out of the target market, or maybe not, who knows?

- mr. pc man (february 8, 2006 at 12:32 am)

you can link to www.designersilkscarf.com if you like.
Hits are always a problem,so if anyone has any good ideas I'd be interested.
Traffic was stevie winwood's group after smallfaces cave ,hole in my shoe was their best shot or am I giving you eggs to suck .They sucked ,but interestingly Stevie passed out on a cigarette and guess what happened to him..........

- penelope (february 8, 2006 at 5:00 am)

key things you left out:

type of processor
Why you went with DDR instead of DDR2(if amd, why not hold out the 4 months for the DDR2?)
graphics card? pci or agp?
raid hard drives? 120 sounds small to not be a raid.. what speed drives? Raptors?

windows documents go easily to linux and unix, and vice versa.. depending what type of documents were discussing. Say you want to transfer text, sure, that works. but if were talking about copying and pasting your game of solitare on windows, not so possible.. but you could also run wine...

also, what made you choose mandrake as the distro? personally i love debian, knoppix is my pick of choice for those not familar with linux... Suse is generally the best for new users i've found...

traffic is a whole different story. if your running a blog, then you want people who are interested to keep reading your blog. if your selling scarfs, you need to find a market of people who want scarfs. if you are trying to convince people to vote for a potato as president, then you need to find people you feel will be convinced by a website to vote for a potato.. and so on.. determine your target audience, then market appropriately..

or you can just just go spammer style and do a bunch of crap hijacking of browsers and such. that always works, if you don't mind your visitors hating you..

this is all i do at work all day long, besides surveying network traffic, so it's really an interesting field and extremely complicated. try getting listed in search engines for starters.

- hans (february 8, 2006 at 4:54 pm)

It's my understanding that my computer can be upgraded as the resources to do so are made feasible... The ironic thing about what you call "going spammer" style, is that MOST of the companies out there that offer such services appear to be going about it in a very nonchalant way, as if, what they are doing, isn't helping you spam your website out to as many people as possible who may or may not be interested or something... I just don't think I should have to pay for it, but in your honest opinion, when it says something like this: "you can submit your website NOW to 40 search engines for free, or pay us $30 to submit it to 40,000 search engines," is it actually worth it to pay the $30?

That's what I'm having a hard time with. I WOULD like my market to be targeted. The target would be people who actually do like saving money, on MOST things... Yeah, sound's maybe "too" big, huh? Well, actually, that is the target. Part of what I'm doing, is trying to find out what MOST people like to buy, and then selling it to them. Kinda like a broker, if you will. Obviously the bigger sales would then also get, bigger attention to myself and my partners in business. My experience as most of you know already is primarily in sales, marketing and consulting, and all in information technologically advanced fields, so while my experience is very broad, it also stands to reason that I have an awful lot to learn of the specifics on how a lot of this internet specific marketing kinda stuff "actually" works... It's very confusing at times.

Any opinions on this for instance? Be honest if you see this kind of thing as a huge waist of time, cause I can say how this kind of thing may increase traffic to your site slightly, but considering that most people utilizing this service are doing nothing more than clicking on a bunch of links in order to increase the amount of credits they earn toward having their OWN URLs displayed for other people who are doing the same thing, seems to me like a huge waist of time to a certain extent. Hell, I went to visit my friend, you know, the one who built my computer, and I'd be willing to bet that all the credits my dumb ass built up clicking on other sites, is long gone by now. From what I can see, most people who are doing these kinds of things are only interested in MLM opportuntities, when all I'm trying to do, is completely legitimate: Sell actual products and services, not just a dream...

So I guess from that perspective, if all MOST people who use TrafficSwarm are usually interested in doing is selling their own dream, than I guess marketing to THEM would be kinda like trying to sell kangaroos to snakes or something...?

- mr. pc man (february 10, 2006 at 6:14 pm)

I basically know NOTHING about hardware, so per my friend, here's the answers to your questions Hans...

AMD sempron 2800+ 64 bit processor... Went with DDR instead of DDR2 cause I didn't want to spend the additional $300 bucks... when it does come out? Don't have a graphics card, don't play computer games, don't need one, yet... 7200 rpms... Can upgrade whenever I want, can have up to 4 drives, etc., when I upgrade, etc. He also didn't charge me ANYTHING to build it, AND, we got the parts together, so I paid for them myself...

- mr. pc man (february 10, 2006 at 6:26 pm)

Oh, and Penelope, if you'd like to talk about linking both of our sites, together...email me here:

(8)mr_pc_man(3)@(2)lycos.com(1)

just remove numbers and paranthesis... I'd also be willing to build a page for you on my site connected to my homepage, if you'd be willing to do the same thing... All I'd ask is whatever we agree we should each get, from business that gets transferred in either my or your direction from people who either know you or me, etc. IE-someone goes to my website, to get to you, I get so much of the sale for sending them to you, vice-versa, etc. Just an idea...

- mr. pc man (february 10, 2006 at 6:32 pm)

#1, you can't upgrade to the dd2 ram, so buying a ddr machine now, is like buying a 2003 model car in 2006 at the same price the 2006 model is going for. or so i've been advising people lately. ram is probably the single most important part of a computer lately and will continue to be for a while, contrary to all the articles talking about how 1 gig of any type, any brand, any speed, is fine... those people would probably assume a celeron render Massive.

you have to have a graphics card, unless your using an old tandy or radioshack rc-23... graphic card is what makes the 1's and 0's into a picture. soo most likely you have onboard video(biggest scam ever), or you have a generic card, still worth mentioning as even if you don't play games, a crappy card hurts your system a lot. imagine putting a broken windshield on your car. sure, maybe you don't care about the view that much, but when you keep crashing into other cars cause you don't notice them, it's a problem.

drive's really are pretty much the bread and butter, so unless you have a raptor or something nice like a scsi raid setup, it's generally just a IDE or SATA question.

What did you pay in total for all the parts, and did you order them online? Please don't tell me you went with a 754 chip either, and you dished out the extra $100 for the 939.... for longterm use, it's the smart choice.

traffic:

As for your questions about traffic. your really going to be in a bit of a mess here with this, see the main problem with so called traffic. it's easy to get. in fact, too simple. i could get you a million hits tomorrow. i could also get you a million page views tomorrow. i could also get you a million unique visits. their all different, but what matters probably the most is the follow in no particular order:

#1, your server the site is on. How much traffic can you handle, whats your bandwidth limit, and how intensive is the site.
#2, Do you care who your visitors are, persay, are you selling femanine products or running a joke site.
#3, are you willing to pay for it, or do you want to do it all yourself
#4, is this a national, regional, or local website that needs specific traffic.

paying the $30 to spamMyAddress.com is not what I ment by the spamming way... that's where you get ripped off. you go to a guy in an alley for a new liver, you got a problem. now you go into an intalian mafia familys house and ask a favor about a guy troubling you and how he has the same blood type and you need a new liver, that's how you get things like that done.

i'll admit, i've run a few spider bots over the web to spam out some sites and stuff for people. mostly i just like making random annoying virus style bots that plague myspace as i pretty much hate the cult of people living on there.

in the end, your going to either end up learning A LOT OF INFORMATION AND PROGRAMMING yourself and probably spend a good 6 months doing so to be able to do it moderately well, or you'll end up paying the $700-$5000 for someone to market your site the correct way, in which they will also need to edit the source code of the site to optimize it for the spiders and current web standards.

I guess it makes sense that you'd not want to link up with me penelope, since I'll probably be capable of finding a vendor who offers the same scarves you do for half as much... Unless of course you make them yourself?

Regarding web building tools, this is what I'm working with, right here:

It sounds to me like you're pretty knowledgeable regarding how the Internet does and doesn't work Hans, and that is what I'm looking for right now. Someone who honestly knows what they are talking about, regarding the Internet and it's dos and don'ts... I'd be willing to pay what I need to pay as long as I'm guaranteed results. Like for instance, NO results, NO money, etc. Certainly I'd pay for it up front, but I'd be expecting a refund if it didn't work out as planned... All I care about, are the results. And what I mean when I say results, is MONEY in my POCKET... By the way, I do happen to have a crack in my windshield right now, and I find it somewhat ironic that you used it as an analogy, since I realize I'm going to have to replace it if it grows all the way across the windshield in my car, to avoid getting tickets. etc. Can you get tickets for building websites, or surfing the net, if you have a cracked windshield? Just kiddin'.... Seriously though, if you or someone you know Hans, can "get er done" like you appear to be saying, just email me per the email address above or have whoever you'd wish to refer to me email me there, etc., or better even yet, just leave an email address for me to email either YOU or them, etc., and I'll contact you myself...

As I mentioned, I don't know a whole lot about the hardware, and don't have access to the friend of mine who knows an awful lot about the hardware, otherwise I'd answer the questions pertaining to specifics regarding hardware. All I can say is, in this instance, I was ignorant. Yes, I avoided the rebates, and the savings of getting a computer ONLINE by purchasing the parts at a store instead. So I'm aware that I probably over paid for the parts by around $100 or so. Guess that makes me stupid. On the other hand, I didn't really have a choice, cause what makes me even more ignorant, is the previous computer I was using to MANAGE everything. Don't even get me started on that end. Let's just say, it was infected with a virus, and had I not done what I did soon, I would have lost EVERYTHING... Also, I sold my OLD computer to someone, for about half as much as I paid for it 6 months ago, wiped the memory clean with a program called NUKE or something like that(per my friend)... They even got a lot of stuff I didn't already have, etc., on the computer. However, I DO need a new monitor for my NEW computer., and I'm looking into a dropshipper/warehouse/etc., who'll be able to offer excellent pricing to ME and my customers, etc., right now. But if any of you know of any good deals on computer monitors, please let me know. I'm not looking to pay a fortune, all I need is what I need. On the other hand, it would be nice to run into a 19" flat screen monitor new or used for under 200 dollars though, I'll admit... Let me recap that end. If any of you know anyone else who's looking for affiliations with other companies, partnerships, and/or who is working with dropshippers/wholesalers etc., that you can either refer me to, or if you yourself are interested in any way, just either email or provide an email so we can talk more specifics, etc. I'm particularly interested in either the services it appears Hans offers, and/or his friends regarding Internet marketing services, etc. Yes, I take my business rather seriously...

Anyone can get 10% off on my website. All they really need to do, is ask for it...dependant on the products in question, etc. I even have a Earn Shopping Points program... Regarding things like bandwidth, once again, if it'll achieve the expected RESULTs, I'll pay for it upfront... I've already put a few dollars into this, and if I have to dig myself a tunnel in order to get out of this hole I'm in right now, I will...

you haven't mentioned yet what it is your website is about, or selling. the sitesell.com thing from first glance at the site, is compeltely bogus crap. there are 2 types of websites you will become familar with when you develop and work with indexing a lot... portal sites, and scam sites. this falls under scam. portal sites just list a billion links to sites that also contain nothing you want, so you just click around for hours till you put in your credit card somewhere and fall victim. the scam site, is a site where they try and tell you "punch my monkey and win a million dollars".. your not going to make 10 grand from home typing 10 hours a week like these ad's say, if you were, everyone would be doing it, and it would be a common real job that people were like "i'm a home typist", but no one does that.

i have this professor for a web design class right now, keep in mind this is grad school soo it's a little more prestigeous than just joe smoe the grad student trying to show me how to use front page.... anyways, this teacher works for the beloved Time Warner AOL. great guy none the less, pretty trendy with stuff, but an absolute zombie to the field. this guy should probably be his own node on here actually, i'll link off and tell about him in a minute.

back to traffic, your talking about internet marketing. it doesn't work the way we'd like. there's a reason engineers hate marketing departments. they are full of it. i build a program that can measure the speeds between this server, and that server, i call it "Ping!" now the marketing deparment gets it and goes "Ping will make your children's bone stronger and lower your monthly car payments!" well shit, ping doesn't do that.. then they go "Ping can be used as a screen saver and is a fun game!" ... well it's not designed for those, but i guess.... "Ping will defragment your hard drive, restore backups, and clean spyware off your pc hourly!" oh god, wtf... but by the end... you've sold a billion of them. it's cheaper in the end for a company to sell a billion broken cars and recall them all 1 by 1 and fix a problem, why? most peoply will buy it and deal with that broken door handle. that's why stores offer mail in rebates. no one ever mails them in really. if sitesell.com doesn't explain to me in bold right in the front top part of their website what they are, or why i want to click the signup button i can see, but no explanation of why i should click it, there's a problem. do you see companies like "sign up here!!" then you walk over and they tell you it's to donate your arms for orphans to use as chew toys.. yeah, some smuck is gonna fall for it, but it's pretty retarded.

if your only looking for "traffic" odds are your going to need to do some scummy things, or spend a good chunk of money, and the results initially won't be good or worth what your spending most likely. all good business spend their first year or so in the red, that's how it goes. so saying "if you can give me results then let's go!" your pretty much only limited with the scummy idea, since it's cheaper, but also means your paying $50 to scumbag LLC to have them infect grandma's pc with a virus forcing her to go to your website everytime she gets on her computer to look at pictures of her grandson.

I'm quitting my job at internet2 this week. later this week or if i get nice and drunk tonight at work i'll post some good reads. as far as this nodes concerend, it's turned too techie and work like for me to enjoy it anymore.

i hate beer farts, why are they so much worse than normal farts?

What is my website selling...? Okay, mainly accessories but also MOST items they plug into... IE-Computers, Hardware, Software, Customized Computers, MP3 Players, Mats, Fragrances, Electronics, Audio Conferencing Tools, Gaming Accessories, Games, Services including but not limited to Construction, Catering, Computer Customization, As Seen On TV Products, a Deal through Dish Network that can't currently be beat going directly through Dish Network, Site Build It! web building services, etc. IE-if someone were to click on that banner above and purchase the program, I'd get paid for it, etc. So basically, ANY products that can be shipped through the mail rather easily, and ANY services you can think of. Or any services anyone who contacts me can think of. If they're willing to PAY for it, I'm willing to OFFER it... That's the key point behind this idea. Taking care of as MANY of EACH persons needs as possible, to keep them satisfied and coming back for more. If anyone's interested, email me HERE:

(8)mr_pc_man(3)@(2)lycos.com(1)

And I'll give you the link to my website.

What I find interesting, is that you clicked on the banner. What I find even more interesting, is that you read some of what they had to say to come to this conclusion, and I appreciate that. But really, all these guys are, are a web-building program specifically for guys like me who don't know the first thing about html code, java script or any of that other mumbo jumbo when it comes to actually "designing" a website. They even have a 10 day process they take you through, just to help you along step by step to building a website based primarily on content, preselling, and drawing the potential customers into the website, to peak their interests before even offering something to buy. Mind you, the content has more to do with the OWNER of the website than it does with them...

But where they help out are on the researching and planning stages of the business. I realize I may be in the red for the first year or so, but I don't mind it either. That however doesn't mean I don't like the idea of getting OUT of the red a little bit sooner than average. I believe the content of my website is strong, all it needs now, is a little bit more of an audience. Personally, I've got a network of over 50 friends and family, who all know me very well. 43 of which are on my email list, and I send out a newsletter about once or twice a week as I make updates to the product/service listings, and the website itself. I've actually already made 10% of my expenses back, and I only started this December 24th of 2005... Not bad for a little more than one month huh? Oh, and can't wait to do my taxes this year, that's a whole other story... The key point I'm trying to get accross is that whatever people need, I'll find it, for less than what they'd normally expect to pay for it, etc. Sometimes it may take me some time to get it for them, but if they end up paying either more or less than 50% for it through me, the only question they have to ask themselves is whether or not it's worth the wait...

Truthfully, I'm using a combination of tools, not just this web builder. They're also completely honest in that this kind of thing takes work and initiative, it's not a "get rich quick" scheme, etc. I got a really good deal on the package to be totally honest with you, when in comparison to OTHER web building programs like Yahoo for instance, these guys offer a HELL of a lot more and you also end up paying a HELL of a lot less for it at the same time. I also got two websites for the price of one, per their "Christmas" special, so I'm selling the other one to my uncle for half what I paid for it. So, in other words, I only really paid half, after he purchases it at the end of this month... He's a photographer, and he wants to promote his photography.

Tonight, my project is to create a flier and to print out business cards which I will distribute throughout the tri-city area some time next week. I've been averaging one or two email addresses from people I run into who say they're interested in the idea, and like saving money, etc. So my list grows by at least one or two people a week, on average. Come Christmas time, I'm hoping to have to hire people just to be capable of placing all the orders. That's my plan. Reinvest ALL profit back into the company for the first 6 months or so, so I'll be ready for the REAL business come 3 to 5 months before Christmas...

Sounds like you're on to bigger and better things, like creating another node besides this one to talk on. Sounds like a good enough idea to me. I'll bother no further with business matters unless people express interest in the subject at hand... After all, this is supposed to be a place to relax, although this particular subject doesn't particularly frustrate me because the more I learn, the easier it becomes to reach my goals...
